Zackie Achmat, a world-renowned pillar of SA's fight against HIV/Aids, lives openly with the virus.
In 1998, he launched the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), which has taken a stand against drug-company profiteering, opposed government's inaction on HIV and secured access to drugs for pregnant women with HIV/Aids.
In 2003 he was named a Time magazine global hero. In 2004 Achmat and the TAC were nominated for the Nobel Peace prize. He joined the anti-apartheid movement in 1976, was involved in youth, labour, health and community organisations and is still a member of the ANC.
Achmat is a founder member of the National Coalition of Gay & Lesbian Equality. He holds a BA Hons from UWC, is studying for an MPhil in law, and has an honorary master's degree from UCT. Achmat, who was married this year, was awarded the Desmond Tutu Fellowship in 2001.
